Did You know

Did you know that?..

Knoxville is a great place to drive from… but not to other cities in the state

With its great location and Interstate links, you can get from Marble City to many other cities in the region, faster than you can drive to Memphis, Tennessee. It takes about 6 hours to drive from Memphis to Knoxville and you could drive all the way to Atlanta, Georgia, and back in about the same amount of time. There are lots of other major cities in neighboring states that are closer to Marble City, than it is to Memphis - including Columbus, Ohio, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Charleston, South Carolina. And it won’t take you that much longer to get to Washington D.C., Detroit, or Chicago - they’re all about 8 hours away!

Besides traffic jams downtown and wonderful drives out into the Smokey Mountains National Park, Marble City has an interesting automobile legacy and future.

The South’s oldest car dealership

Cowan Rodgers began working in the vehicle industry in 1898 with his bicycle shop, Biddle Cycle Co. Around this time he tried to build his own car but found it harder than expected - however, the car he built was still the first car to drive the streets of Knoxville. A couple of years later he started selling Oldsmobiles and Locomobiles from his dealership in the downtown area. Back then you didn’t have a traditional showroom and Cowan probably went around showing the cars to the more affluent and forward-thinking members of Marble City society. His dealership has since become known as the first car dealership in the south and many years later developed into Rodger’s Cadillac, which is still in business today.

Home of auto parts and tire manufacturing

While the city of Knoxville may not have any major car makers, unlike the rest of the state, it is home to many suppliers of the car manufacturing industry. The following tire and auto parts manufacturers all operate out of Marble City:
  • The Carlstar Group LLC manufacturer of specialty tires and wheels, and owner of the brands Carlisle, Cragar, ITP, Marastar, Black Rock, and Unique, is based in Tennessee, with a major manufacturing plant based just outside Marble City.
  • Leader Industrial Tires makes industrial tire presses in their Knoxville manufacturing facility, supplying many giants of the tire industry.
  • ARC Automotive makers of airbags have their headquarters in Marble City, as well as manufacturing, research, and engineering facilities.
  • Lokar makes quality aftermarket products, including throttle, transmission, interior, and exterior products, at their Marble City factory.
  • Denso manufactures vehicle air-conditioning, power-train, and safety and cockpit systems for the automotive industry and supplies parts to many major global automotive manufacturers.
  • Apoc Industries make accessories for trucks and SUVs and is based just outside Marble City.
  • WRQ provides automotive parts inspection services from its location in Knoxville.
If you’re interested in buying some Tennessee-made tires, possibly even made at the Carlstar factory, just outside Marble City, then check out United Tires, where you’ll find a selection of Carlisle Tires and ITP Tires from this local company.

What tires do you need for Knoxville weather?

What tires do you need for Knoxville weather?
Marble City has a humid subtropical climate, which means it experiences hot, humid summers and fairly mild winters. The area typically sees around 50 inches of rainfall each year, with July and December being the wettest months. Snowfall is also fairly common in Knoxville, however, the city only has around 4 inches of snow each winter, almost exclusively in January and February. July is usually the hottest month of the year with an average high temperature of 88 °F, while January is typically the coldest with an average low temperature of 30 °F.

Winter

This small amount of snow means that for many people, winter tires are not essential. If you regularly drive out into the surrounding mountains in winter, then it’s a different story, but for people who stay in the urban area in January and February, a set of all-season tires (mud and snow-rated), will generally suffice, perfectly well. They are durable, and work well in wet and dry conditions, on unpaved roads, as well as on city streets and highways. They can deal with light snow too, which is generally all the city sees.

Summer

For lovers of performance and sports cars, summer tires may be the preferred choice for the bulk of the year. They grip onto the pavement exceedingly well, allowing for a sporty style of motoring - fast braking, acceleration, and cornering. If they are chosen for the summer months they should be replaced when winter comes, as they will harden up in the cold, making them a less-than-safe choice on icy or snowy roads. They can be switched out for all-season or winter tires, depending on your driving preferences

DRIVERS’ KNOXVILLE GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Knoxville guide: practical information
Drivers’ Knoxville guide: practical information
This bustling city with great nightlife is wonderful to live in but driving around the city can bring some challenges. With our handy guide to parking, unspoken rules of the road, and seasonal tire changes, you’ll handle it like a pro.

Live traffic report

Marble City is known for congestion and construction work especially downtown, so checking the live traffic news should be a regular habit:

Seasonal tire changeover

The climate in Marble City is generally mild enough that for many people a seasonal tire changeover isn’t required. If you use snow and mud-rated all-season tires you can keep them on your car throughout the year. However, there are a few exceptions who may want to switch out their tires twice a year.

Summer season

Many of the drivers of performance cars in the city prefer to use summer tires for added traction and performance, and these work exceptionally well during the hotter months. They hug the road beautifully allowing for a high-adrenaline style of driving. Luckily you can keep these tires on your car for the bulk of the year in the city as temperatures only drop below an average of 45 °F for 3 months of the year. So keep your summer tires on from March to November.

Winter season

If you use summer tires you’ll be well advised to take them off for winter as the special soft rubber can become more rigid and slip, rather than grip the road. Generally change your tires at the end of November or early December and then again in late February or early March. You can choose to put on winter tires (but not studded ones as they are not allowed in Tennessee) or all-season tires built for mud and snow.

Driving Laws

Always stick to the rules of the road - but as you know they can vary from city to city or state to state. Here are a few relevant driving laws for Marble City:
  1. One-way streets: Always drive the correct way on a one-way street, of which downtown has many. If you discover you are driving the wrong way, turn on your hazard lights and back up until you can get in the right direction.
  2. Crosswalks: When approaching a crosswalk always slow down and give way to any pedestrians trying to cross - this applies to both marked and unmarked crosswalks.
  3. Construction zones: These are common in Marble City so always slow down when driving through a construction zone and obey the instructions from any signs or people directing traffic.
  4. Minimum driving age: The youngest driving age is 16 with a learner’s permit, although nighttime driving is restricted for young drivers.

Unspoken Road Rules

When driving in Marble City here are a few local tips to be aware of:
  • Downtown traffic is always busy so be prepared and leave a little extra time when driving there.
  • Watch out for people failing to parallel park around the Gay Street area - we don’t know why but there’s something about the area that prevents people from parking.
  • Look out for people riding scooters - whether on the pavement or the sidewalk they can be a liability and nobody wants to hit one.
  • Watch out for cyclists too - they don’t always obey the rules of the road as they should. But equally, remember to give them the space they need - it's their road too.

Parking rules

When you’re in a new city parking can be daunting, but here are some top tips and rules to watch out for, in Marble City:
  • Parking meters are in effect from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m, Monday to Saturday in the downtown area on Gay Street and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. elsewhere downtown.
  • Stop-N-Go signs in 6 locations downtown give you 15 minutes of free parking and you should use your vehicle flashers when you park in these spots.
  • Free parking is available at 3 downtown garages, City's Market Square, State Street Garage, and Locust Street Garage all weekend and after 6 p.m. on weekdays.
  • Live parking availability and a parking map are available on the official Downtown Knoxville website.
You can find all the local parking regulations on the official city ordinance website.

Window tint laws

Tinting vehicle windows is a popular way of getting more privacy and keeping the blazing sun out of your car. Various regulations are in place and these are the relevant ones for Marble City:
  • Windshield: Below the AS-1 line at least 70% of light must be able to pass through; above the AS-1 line, any darkness of tint is allowed.
  • Front side windows: At least 35% of light must be able to pass through.
  • Back side windows: At least 35% of light must be able to pass through.
  • Rear window: At least 35% of light must be able to pass through.
Learn all about the latest and greatest trends in the world of tinting, find out about the newest products, read expert reviews and get the best advice on tinting your vehicle’s windows.

Helmet laws

Like many places the helmet laws in Knoxville depend on age:
  • Motorcycle helmets are required for all motorcycle riders and passengers with a few very rare exceptions.
  • Bicycle helmets must be worn by anyone under 16 on a public road or sidewalk.

Roads and highways

Knoxville is very well connected to the rest of the country via various interstates and other highways.

Interstates

Marble City is served by a number of Interstate highways, including I-40, I-75, I-81, and I-640. These highways provide access to the city from all directions and connect Marble City with other major cities in Tennessee and across the country.
  • I-40 is one of the main east-west highways in the country and runs through downtown Knoxville. It provides access to Nashville and then all the way to California to the west and Asheville to the east before heading all the way to North Carolina. In the city, it runs through the center along with the I-75.
  • I-75 is a major north-south highway and runs through Knoxville on its way from Michigan to Florida. It provides access to Chattanooga to the south and Lexington to the north. This highway joins up with the I-40 downtown and travels a few miles together west, before splitting and heading south near Eaton.
  • I-81 doesn’t actually run through the city, as it begins a few miles to the east in Dandrige, but this is a useful link to many cities to the east and north, and eventually the Canadian border.
  • I-640 is a partial loop highway that goes around the north of the city and is an alternate route for traffic going between the I-40 and the I-75.
  •

Other highways

As well as these Interstate routes there are several major US routes and State highways that run through Marble City.
  • US 129, is one of the busiest highways in the city and is also known as the Alcoa Highway It runs from the downtown area south providing access to the University of Tennessee and McGhee Tyson Airport. It connects the city with Maryville before heading out of state all the way to Florida.
  • US 11, is a major north-south highway but runs from east to west through Marble City. It goes all the way from Louisiana to New York, and within the state connects the city with Chattanooga and Kingsport.
  • US 70 runs along with the US 11 through Marble City. It connects the city with Memphis and Nashville.
  • US 441, also called Chapman Highway, runs north to south through Knoxville. It connects the city with Sevierville and Gatlinburg as well as being the best way to get to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
  • Tennessee State Route 158 runs around the southern side of the downtown area providing access to the UT Campus.

Scenic routes

In and around Marble City there are lots of beautiful places to drive. Visit Knoxville has put together some great driving tours of the area and here are our favorites:

Fun facts

  • Marble City got its first electric street car in 1890 and it went from Lake Ottossee to Gay Street.
  • The first train pulled into Knoxville way back in 1855.
  • In 2011 a Marble City native, Trevor Bayne was the youngest driver to win the Daytona 500 in 2011 at only 20 years of age.
  • Marble City almost had an Interstate ring road in the form of I-604, but due to some ‘controversy’, it was never completed.

Drivers in Tennessee, and Marble City, in particular, love their trucks and SUVs. Going out into the wilderness is a popular pastime so you need a vehicle to match. And these vehicles are often carrying heavy loads, or need to drive over rough terrain, so need tires to match. There are a couple of options that work particularly well in this region.
All-terrain tires are designed for use on a variety of surfaces, including pavement, dirt, gravel, and mud. They typically have a deeper tread than traditional passenger tires, which helps to improve traction on loose or slippery surfaces. All-terrain tires also tend to be more resistant to punctures and damage from rocks and other debris. While they are not necessarily the best choice for every situation, they can be a good option for drivers who frequently encounter unpaved roads or who want the peace of mind of knowing they can handle almost any driving conditions.
Off-road tires are for the more hardcore outdoors enthusiasts, as they perform best away from the pavement, and are great for handling the trickiest of terrain, but won’t be so comfortable or fuel-efficient on the roads. They typically have a deeper tread than regular passenger vehicle tires, which helps to provide better traction on loose soil, sand, or gravel. Of course, they can also be used on paved roads, but they may produce more noise and wear out more quickly than regular tires. Some of the benefits of off-road tires include improved traction and stability on uneven surfaces, as well as a smoother ride. If you frequently drive on unpaved roads or in off-road conditions, investing in a set of off-road tires may be a good idea.

What tires are best for Knoxville?

For most people, the best tires for Knoxville are all-season tires. However, there are a few things to consider when deciding what type of tires are best for Marble City. The first is the type of driving you'll be doing. If you'll mostly be driving around town, then all-season tires will be fine. However, if you're planning on doing a lot of highway driving, then touring tires might be a better option. The second thing to consider is the weather conditions in Knoxville. If it’s not winter time then summer tires will be a good bet. However, if you're expecting to encounter some snow and ice, then all-season tires marked with M&S for mud as snow, or winter tires might be a better choice. Ultimately, the best type of tires for your vehicle will depend on your individual driving needs and the time of year. But whatever tires you choose, make sure to keep an eye on the condition of your treads and replace them when necessary.

Are summer tires good for Knoxville weather?

Summer tires are a good choice for most of the year in Knoxville, Tennessee, except for January and February. In the winter, all-season tires, or snow tires are a better option because they can cope with cold weather better than summer tires. In the warmer months, summer tires’ special rubber mixture will grip the road beautifully, but as temperatures drop regularly below 45 °F the mixture will harden, making the tires more prone to slipping and sliding. So if you do use summer tires in Marble City remember to change them out in winter.
