About Greenboro

Greensboro is the third-largest city in North Carolina with a population of nearly 300,000 people. Situated in the northern part of North Carolina, the city is best known as ‘Tournament Town’ because of the large number of athletic venues, courts, fields, stadiums, and swimming pools it boasts.

Greensboro’s Manufacturing History

Although Greensboro wasn’t a major hub for auto manufacturing in the early 20th century, there were still a few small companies that build cars and motorized buggies. The most successful of these was Corbitt Automobile Company, an enterprise that began building automobiles in 1907 and went on to expand into producing light and heavy trucks, intracity buses, personnel vehicles for the U.S. Army, and farm tractors.
The first automobiles arrived in Greensboro in 1898. Just two years later, Gilbert Waters saw automobiles on a trip to Baltimore and tried to interest his father and other investors in setting up an automobile manufacturing business in Greensboro. Unfortunately, his initiative was unsuccessful and car manufacturing never materialized on a grand scale in North Carolina’s third-largest city.

Toyota electric car batteries

Today, ‘Tournament Town’ is becoming an integral part of the electric car battery manufacturing industry, with Toyota recently announcing its plans to invest 1.3 billion in a production plant. When it opens in 2025, the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite will initially have the capacity to deliver lithium-ion batteries for 200,000 vehicles.

Greensboro’s Climate

Greensboro enjoys warm, humid summers and very cold short winters with plenty of snow on the ground. Skies are partly cloudy year-round. The summer months are between May and September. The hottest month of the year is July, with an average high of 87 °F. Winter is between November and February with the coldest month being January when the average low reaches 32 °F.

With plenty of off-road adventures to be had in and around Greensboro, all-terrain tires or rugged terrain tires can be a good option for drivers who know they’ll be venturing out into the wilds regularly. off-road tires may cost more than standard tires, but if you find that you are spending more time off-road than on highways, they are a great tire option.

Seasonal tire changeover

Warm-season

During the warm season in Greensboro, from April to October most residents drive around on either all-season tires or summer tires. Summer tires are preferred by drivers who aim to get maximum performance from their vehicles and are often used by drivers of sports cars or high-performance cars. Summer tires are best driven on hot, dry roads, but also handle well in rain showers. Summer tires are highly responsive, they offer stable cornering and superior capabilities for braking and accelerating.

Cold Season

As the cold weather draws in around mid-October, Greensboro residents are advised to change over from summer and all-season tires to winter tires and snow tires. There’s no specific date for switching to winter tires, a more accurate gauge is to track when the average daily temperature falls below 45 degrees Fahrenheit. This is when you know that the pressure in your tires has dropped and they no longer have such good traction on the roads. By changing over to winter tires in mid-October, you know you’re ready for the first snowfalls of winter.
If you find yourself driving on particularly icy roads in winter, you may also want to consider buying studdable tires. They have studs that can be screwed into predrilled holes in the tread and removed whenever necessary. They’re a great way of giving you the extra grip you need on icy winter roads, but also the flexibility to drive without studs in your tires when the roads thaw.

Driving Laws

To avoid incurring needless fines, it’s important to be across Greensboro’s driving laws before taking to the roads. Here are some of the most important ones to be aware of:
  • Parking on highways: Parking on highways is strictly prohibited.
  • Headlights: Drivers must use headlights from sunrise to sunset and when using windshield wipers.
  • Turns on red: Right turns at a red light are only permitted if the car has first come to a complete standstill. Left turns on red are not permitted at any time.
  • Move over for emergency vehicles: Motorists must shift lanes or slow down for emergency vehicles with flashing lights coming up behind them.
  • Legal blood alcohol level: It’s illegal to drive in Greensboro if your blood alcohol level is over 0.8%. For drivers tested and found to be over the limit, the maximum fine is $4,000.
For more information on North Carolina’s driving laws, visit the North Carolina Department of Transportation website

Unspoken Road Rules

  • Don't drive above or below the posted speed limit. If the sign says 65 mph, try to drive at this speed.
  • It’s polite to wave or give a thumbs up if another driver lets you into their lane. Not doing so is considered rude.
  • When lane merging, accelerate to reach the speed limit.
  • The left lane is primarily for passing so never drive slowly in it. Once you have passed a car, make sure you slide back into the right lane again.
  • Move your car away from the pump if you’re going inside.
  • Always try to help the stranded or injured if you can.
  • Don’t steal somebody else’s parking spot. If you see another car already indicating to turn into a spot, find another one.

Parking rules

Nobody likes getting a parking ticket. To avoid any run-ins with Greensboro parking inspectors, follow these simple parking rules:
  • Parking meters are in service from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
  • Downtown metered spots are free on Sundays and after 6 p.m. on weekdays
  • If you do get a parking ticket, you can pay online at Greensboro North Carolina Website
  • Metered parking can be paid for using coins, credit cards, and a cellphone app.
  • Parking may be off-limits on particular streets for special events such as parades, festivals, fireworks, or during street construction.
For more information on parking laws, visit the Greensboro North Carolina website.

Roads and highways

Greensboro is relatively well serviced with highways and roads. A recent survey by Waze, a community-based navigation app discovered that Greensboro was the city that ranked the highest for driver satisfaction. Here are some of the major highways and roads to be aware of:

The Greensboro Urban Loop

The Greensboro Urban Loop is a 43.1-mile beltway that loops around Greensboro, mostly within the city limits. Currently, the loop is only partially completed with the remaining section still under construction. The Greensboro Urban Loop is part of the N.C. Department of Transportation’s plan to improve traffic flow within and around the city. The loop carries Interstate 73 (I-73), I-85, I-785, I-840, and U.S. Route 421 (US 421).

Deadliest Roads in North Carolina

A recent study based on statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that a stretch of U.S. 29 in East Greensboro and a section of Interstate 40 interesting Greensboro were among the seven most deadly stretches of road in North Carolina. Take the utmost care when driving along this stretch of road.

Advice on the best tires for Greensboro is dependent on the season, as well as your own personal driving activities.

Off-road Tires

If you’re a city dweller but like to frequently get out of the crowded city and hit the unsealed tracks, you might want to consider investing in a set of specialist mud-terrain tires or all-terrain tires. These tires are more expensive than normal tires but they usually have a long tread life and more importantly will keep you safe on muddy, rocky, or mountainous terrain.

Warm Weather Tires

For drivers who rarely leave the paved comfort of our highways, you may want to consider looking at our range of highway tires, all-season tires, or even summer tires. Summer tires are intended for drivers that aim to get the best performance out of their vehicles. Frequently used by sports car enthusiasts, their asymmetrical shallow grooves and f tooth-shaped solid ribs provide greater contact between the rubber and the road surface.

Cold Weather Tires

For the freezing and sometimes harsh winters in Greensboro, a seasonal tire change really is recommended. From mid-October onwards, drivers should consider switching from all-season and summer tires winter tires or snow tires. Whatever the season, be sure to check the tread left on your tires from time to time, as well as your tire pressure. Failure to do so could lead to accidents.
