Did You know

Buffalo once almost became the center of the automotive industry!

Buffalo almost became as key to automobile manufacturing as Detroit. In the early 1900s, Henry Ford visited the “Queen City’ to participate in an automobile show. Ford had aspirations to build a huge assembly plant in Buffalo but he requested and was denied financial incentives, so instead, he sought land elsewhere.

Automotive Buffalo at a glance

Automotive Buffalo at a glance
Buffalo is the second-largest city in New York with a population of just over 250,000. Located in the western part of the state, at the head of the Niagra River, it lies close to Southern Ontario on the Canadian border. Its climate demands a very careful tire choice. Read on to learn everything about it!

Automotive history

Since the late 1800s, the automotive industry has played a significant role in Buffalo’s economic history. In the early decades of automotive history, dozens of different makes and models were built in Buffalo. The state went on to produce high-quality cars, such as the Thomas Flyer and the Pierce-Arrow, two of the greatest cars of the 20th century. This was all at a time when the rest of the country was mass-producing highly affordable cars.
Despite passing up Buffalo as a location to build one of his first manufacturing plants, Ford did go on to build assembly plants in the city, along with a huge stamping plant in Woodlawn.
Between 1923 and 1942, General Motors assembled Chevrolet in its plant in Buffalo. This stopped during World War II when the plant pivoted to defense production. In 1946, the plant converted back to automotive production.

Dunlop

The British company, Dunlop has also long been a part of Buffalo’s automotive industry. Today, Dunlop continues to produce replacement tires for the automotive and motorcycle industries, only now the company is controlled by Sumitomo Rubber Industries of Japan.

The Playboy

The last automotive business to establish itself in Buffalo was The Playboy, a relatively cheap two-door convertible car, positioned as families second vehicle. Although there were plans to produce 100,000 cars, 97 were only ever produced, before The Playboy suffered bankruptcy.

Peak Traffic

Although not nearly as congested with traffic as neighboring cities, such as New York, Pittsburg, and Cleveland, Buffalo still has traffic tailbacks during rush hour. Interstate-190 and Interstate-290 both get very congested and are best avoided during peak hours. Also, Ellicot Street is one of the main streets in downtown Buffalo that suffers from heavy traffic during the day.

What tires do you need for Buffalo weather?

Summers are warm and cloudy, winters are snowy and freezing

In Buffalo, summers are warm but cloudy and winters are snowy and freezing, often with an icy wind blowing. Throughout the year, the temperature fluctuates between 19°F and 79°F and rarely drops below 4°F or exceeds 86°F. As a tourist, the best time of year to visit Buffalo is from late June to early September. As fall ends and winter advances, it’s important to check both the tread on your tires and the pressure within them. When Buffalo temperatures drop by 10 degrees, your tire pressure also drops by 1 pound. Once the daily temperature regularly falls below 45 degrees, it’s time to change out your all-season tires or summer tires for winter tires.

Time to change the tires!

Buffalo drivers can get away with driving on all-season or summer tires through spring, summer, and fall. In mid-October when the temperature drops drastically and winter sets in, it’s advisable to switch over to winter tires or snow tires that offer superior grip and prevent sliding and skidding on snowy and icy roads.
Need to buy new winter or snow tires to tackle Buffalo’s snowy winter season? With many options in stock, ranging in size, fit, and price, you’re guaranteed to find a set of tires that suits your needs. For those on a tight budget, check out our used tires under $50 and new tires under $100, or tires that have only been driven once. Shopping for tires online has never been easier than with United Tires. Order before 12 p.m. and your order will be shipped the same business day! All our tires are shipped free to your door using FedEx.

Explore the countryside with comfort

Many Buffalo residents like to explore the surrounding countryside and offroad tracks. For those who regularly leave the bitumen roads to hit dirt tracks and uneven terrain, we recommend browsing our range of all-terrain tires or rugged terrain tires. If you’re confident you’ll spend the majority of your time offroading, then you should consider opting for a set of off-road tires.
At United Tires, we take customer service seriously, offering personalized 24-hour sales via our toll-free hotline 1-888-566-6214. We also have an easy-to-access online chat function. Simply click on the button to initiate a chat with our sales team.

Live traffic report

Buffalo’s traffic may not be as bad as many other more populated cities, but it’s still good to know which roads to avoid when you are trying to get somewhere in a hurry during peak hour traffic. For the most reliable information, consult the following live traffic reports:

Seasonal tire changeover

As the cold weather draws in around mid-October, it’s advisable for all Buffalo residents to change over their summer and all-season tires for winter or snow tires. There’s no specific date for this changeover, rather an understanding that once the daily temperature average falls below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the pressure in your tires also falls, giving them less grip and traction on the road. By changing over to winter tires, you’re ready for the first winter snowstorms and able to drive safely on snow-laden, icy roads.
At utires.com our huge range of winter tires starts from less than $45, helping you drive safely for less in those snowy, cold months.
There will be certain weeks during the winter months when roads become particularly icy and slippery. At these times, studdable tires offer a great solution to Buffalo drivers. With studdable tires, studs can be screwed into predrilled holes in the tread and removed when necessary. Studdable winter tires provide exceptional traction on icy roads but can be removed for less treacherous driving conditions.

Driving Laws

Before driving on Buffalo roads it’s important to familiarize yourself with the state road laws. The following are the most important ones to be aware of:
  1. The speed limit around schools: The speed limit around private and public schools is 20mph. Don’t get caught out speeding on roads in front of schools.
  2. Cellphone usage prohibited: The use of cell phones for texting or talking is strictly prohibited in NY state. If caught by police, you will receive a hefty fine.
  3. 16+ to drive: In Buffalo, you must be at least 16 to drive a motor vehicle.
  4. Always stop at red lights: Failure to stop at a red light or stop sign carries a $200 fine.
  5. Legal blood alcohol level: To drive in Buffalo you’re blood alcohol level can’t be more than 0.8%. Drivers tested and found to be over the limit are fined between $500 and $1,000.

Unspoken Road Rules

  1. Don't drive below the posted speed limit. If the sign says 65 mph, try to drive at this speed.
  2. Wave or give a thumbs up if another driver lets you into their lane.
  3. Accelerate to reach the speed limit when merging into a lane.
  4. Don’t drive slowly in the left lane because it’s primarily for passing. Once you have passed a car, slide back into the right lane again.
  5. Never touch somebody else’s car without asking permission first.
  6. Try not to drive in somebodies blindspot as this could lead to an accident. Speed up or slow down to make sure they can see you.
  7. Never steal somebody else’s parking spot. If you can see they are about to pull into a particular spot, let them have it, don’t compete for it.
  8. If you bump into somebody else’s vehicle and bump or scratch it, make sure you leave a note with your contact details.

Parking rules

It’s usually not too difficult to find a park on NY state’s second-largest city streets, particularly if you’re willing to feed a meter. Here are some tips to help you park in Buffalo and avoid receiving fines:
  1. Parking meters are in service from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  2. Downtown metered spots are free on weekends and after 5 p.m. on weekdays
  3. Metered parking can be paid for using coins, credit cards, and a cellphone app.
  4. Parking may be off-limits on particular streets for special events such as parades, festivals, fireworks, or during street construction.
For more information on Buffalo parking rules, visit the BuffaloPlace website.

Window tint laws

In Buffalo, it’s illegal for the windshield and front side windows to block more than 30% of the light. To remain legal on the roads, 70% of light must be allowed to come through the windshield. This law also applies to the rear window, unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides.
Any station wagons, coupes, sedans, hardtops, hatchbacks, or convertibles must also allow at least seventy percent of light from the outside to pass through the window.
Particular medical conditions can obtain exemptions from tinting laws. To read the full regulations visit the New York State Department of Motor vehicles website. Want to know more about the tinting industry and its trends? Find out the latest news, get pro-tips and advice on choosing the best products by the best brands, and much more!

Roads and highways

Many major roads traverse the city of Buffalo, including eight New York state highways, one three-digit Interstate highway, and one U.S. Highway. Here’s all you need to know about Buffalo’s main arterial roads:
  • Interstate 190: Locally known as One-Ninety, the I-190 serves much of southern Buffalo and some of the first miles of the Erie Canal. It bisects downtown Buffalo before crossing Grand Island and traveling around the outskirts of Niagara Falls before crossing the Niagara River on the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge into Ontario, Canada.
  • US 62: The US Highway 62 connects Mexico and Canada. It runs from the Mexican border at El Paso, Texas to Niagra Falls, New York.
  • NY5: This state highway goes for 370 miles across the state of New York. It starts at the Pennsylvania state line and passes through Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica, Schenectady, and several other smaller cities and communities on its way to downtown Albany in Albany County. To the west of New York, NY 5 continues as Pennsylvania Route 5 to Erie.
  • NY33: This highway in west New York runs east to west and runs for just under 10 miles. It stretches from NY5 in Buffalo to NY31 in Rochester in the east. Today, it’s the only state highway that directly connects both cities. The westernmost 10 miles of NY33 is the main route to Buffalo Niagara International Airport.
  • NY198: This state highway is located entirely within the city of Buffalo. It’s otherwise known as the Scajaquada Expressway after Scajaquada Creek, which it runs beside as it heads across northern Buffalo.
As with many New York cities, Buffalo has a number of toll roads and bridges that must be paid for in advance of travel, to avoid incurring large fines. Recently, New state authorities have removed many Buffalo toll booths and replaced them with a cashless payment system. This is in an attempt to be more environmentally friendly and improve traffic congestion in the area.
Find out more about New York’s cashless toll roads by visiting the New York State Thruway Authority website.

Fun facts

  • Buffalo has over 300 bicycle parking locations due to the popularity of cycling around the city.
  • The city played a huge role in helping produce the world’s first brass carriages, otherwise known as horseless carriages.
  • It’s illegal for steam-powered trains to go faster than 6 miles per hour while crossing a street in Buffalo.

Huge temperature swings throughout the year in Buffalo mean that local residents require at least one tire change a year.

Warm Weather

During the warmer months, between April and October, many people drive on all-season tires or summer tires.

Cold Weather

However in mid-October when colder weather hits and snow often lays on the ground, it’s advisable to switch over to a set of winter or snow tires. Whatever the season, be sure to check the tread left on your tires from time to time, as well as your tire pressure. Failure to do so could lead to accidents.

Off-Roading

However, if you’re a city person who likes to get into the country as much as possible and go off-roading, you may want to consider investing in a set of specialist mud-terrain tires or all-terrain tires. These tires offer extreme grip and traction in thick mud and on unsealed surfaces.

Highway driving

For drivers who rarely leave the paved comfort of our highways, you may want to consider looking at our range of highway tires. The main benefit of highway tires is that they are designed for long commutes, high speeds, and maximum performance on paved roads. They also provide a quiet, smooth ride while maximizing fuel economy.

FAQ

Where to buy tires in Buffalo?

The United Tires website makes buying new or used high-quality tires in Buffalo a quick and easy process. With a catalog of over 60,000 new and used tires, we are confident we have the right set of tires for your vehicle. Best of all, our prices are often 50% less for many top brands and all orders are delivered straight to your door, using FedEx. Why waste time visiting tire outlets when you can shop for tires online for less, with the handy support of our 24-hour online sales team?

What tires are best for Buffalo?

We recommend two sets of tires — summer and winter. More Buffalo residents drive on all-season tires through spring, summer, and fall than on any other tire type. But in mid-October when the average daily temperature consistently falls below 45°F, drivers switch to winter or snow tires. For those wishing to get maximum performance from their cars during the warmest months of the year, invest in a set of summer tires. Summer tires are designed only for driving in dry or wet weather in temperatures above 45 °F.

Do I need winter tires in Buffalo?

Yes is the simple answer. Winters in Buffalo are usually freezing cold and deliver plenty of snow and ice. By mid-October, residents need to think about changing out their all-season or summer tires for winter tires, before snow and ice hit the roads. Winter tires or studdable tires increase grip on the road during the most treacherous months. For a wide range of winter tires, with prices starting from less than $50 on our website.
