It’s still illegal to honk your horn in New York City!

It’s illegal to honk your horn in “The City that Never Sleeps” unless it’s an emergency. In 1975, NYC passed a law limiting the use of a car horn as a ‘sound signal for imminent danger.’ Drivers who honk their horns inappropriately can be fined up to $350.

Populous cities, busy roads

New York is truly one of the most beautiful and diverse states in the US. In the north, you can experience vivid landscapes, mountainsides, and rural country life. In the south of the state lies the world’s most famous city, NYC in all its glittering glory. Although only the 27th largest state geographically, New York is the fourth most populous state in the US after California, Texas, and Florida. With a population topping 19 million, these days more than 8 million people live in New York City itself. Commuting here, therefore, is not easy.

…And still a safe state to drive!

Surprisingly, New York is one of the safest states to drive in the US. According to a 2015 report, it ranks as the second safest state to drive in after Massachusetts, with 91% of New Yorkers choosing to wear a seatbelt, above the national average of 87%.
Due to its 24-hour subway system, as well as its comprehensive network of buses, ferries, and computer trains, NY is renowned for having one of the most outstanding public transport systems in the world. This also means New Yorkers are less likely to own a car, particularly if they live in NYC itself.

Automotive manufacturing

NY has a rich heritage of automotive manufacturing, in fact, Manhattan, Buffalo, and Saratoga Springs were once home to over 100 automobile manufacturers. In the early 1900s, New Yorkers owned 60% more cars than the residents of any other state in the US. It was this extremely high demand for cars that lead to New York becoming a hotbed of automobile manufacturing.
Between 1910 and 1930, some of the world's first motor parkways, and forerunners to highways were also built in NY state. By the 1940s, more than 3 million cars were vying for space on the roads with the car industry helping New York maintain its mantle as the economic center of the nation.

Saratoga Automobile Museum

This fascinating automobile museum opened to the public in 2002. Located inside the old Saratoga mineral water bottling plant within Saratoga Spa State Park, the museum's mission is to preserve and exhibit automobiles and automobile artifacts. It helps educate the general public about the important role the state played in the development and popularization of the automobile as a mode of transport. The museum also hosts a range of interactive displays, lectures, and interactive shows.
For more information visit the official website for the Saratoga Automobile Museum.

New York International Auto Show

The New York International Auto Show is a spectacular 10-day automotive event that showcases new vehicle models as well as hosts automobile-related conferences, forums, symposiums, and other gatherings. Established in 1900, it was the first automotive exhibition to be held in North America. Held in March or April each year at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, it’s a hugely popular event attended by 34 automakers and over a million visitors. For more information on the New York International Auto Show visit their website.

Choose your tires wisely

New York state has distinct seasons, and we do recommend paying extra attention to choosing the right tires for each of them. Rather than spending big on one set of all-season tires, consider buying a lightly used set of summer tires and a set of used winter tires for around the same cost.
Thinking of making a purchase? Visit our by season car tires section! Place your order before 12 p.m. and we guarantee same-day free shipping right to your door!

Cold season

Winter hits NY around mid-October and lasts until early April, with an average daily high temperature below 48 °F. When it drops below 45 °F, you know it’s time to change your tires for winter tires of studdable tires, both of which offer superior grip on snow and ice. The coldest month of the year in NYC is usually January, with an average low of 29°F and a high of 40°F. Shop online on our website and choose from a wide selection of new or used tires, starting from $45 onwards.

Warm-season

The warm season in New York includes spring, summer, and fall. The best tires for this weather are either new or used summer tires or all season tires, which can be kept on your car right up until winter hits. UTires carries a huge selection of tire brands, with prices starting at $27.27.

To get an accurate gauge of the traffic on the roads at any given time, it’s advisable to follow reliable life traffic reports online. They will give you an accurate overview of the roads that are best avoided during peak hour traffic, usually between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. For reliable live traffic reports for the New York area, visit:

Seasonal tire changeover

All-season car tires

More New Yorkers drive with all-season tires than any other tire type because they offer great safe driving for most of the year. Buy new and used all-season tires from United Tires with prices starting from only $27.70. But for better performance and the increased safety, we recommend looking into buying two sets of tires — summer and winter. By shopping online on our website you can save up to 50% on their purchase!

Summer tires

Summer tires enable drivers to get the best out of their vehicles during the warmest months of the year. In April, when the daily temperature starts heating up and surpassing 45°F, it’s time to consider switching to summer tires. Save money and buy new and barely used summer tires on our website and receive your order in no time via free home FedEx delivery.

Winter Tires

From mid-October onwards, NY is likely to experience cold and wintery weather. For this reason, each year, from mid-October onwards, it’s permitted for New Yorkers to change over to using winter tires or studdable tires. Winter tires keep your wheels closer to the road and allow more space for the snow and slush to escape. Studdable tires have metal studs inserted into the tread to increase grip on ice and snow. Driving laws

Driving Laws

6 things you need to know about the driving laws in New York State

  1. No right turn on a red light: Unlike in every other city in the states, in NYC it’s prohibited to make a right turn at a red light after a full stop.
  2. Don’t block the box: If you are waiting at a light and see that it’s about to change to red, remain where you are. If you get caught in the middle of an intersection ‘blocking the box”, you will pay a hefty fine.
  3. Sleeping in cars in South Hampton: In South Hampton it’s illegal to sleep in your car between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on any street, park, recreation area, beach access road, or parking area owned, controlled, operated, or maintained by the village.
  4. Illegal undressing: In the village of Sag Harbor it’s illegal to undress in your car.
  5. Drink Driving: It’s illegal to drive in New York with a blood alcohol level of over 0.8%. The first DWI offense carries a penalty of $1,000 and up to one year in jail. For a second offense, the state revokes your driving license for up to six months.
  6. No usage of hand-held devices whilst driving: It’s illegal for drivers in New York to use a handheld cellphone or computer while driving. If caught, fines range between $50 to $150 for the first offense, between $50 and $200 for the second offense, if within 18 months, and between $50 and $400 for a third offense within 18 months.
  7. Tolls paid within 30 days: Any tolls must be paid within 30 days of receipt, otherwise a late fee of $5 will be added to the toll. Pay toll fees at www.tollsbymailny.com

Unspoken Road Rules

The experience of driving in New York state varies hugely depending on your location. In the North of the state, you are likely to find wide-open spaces, uncongested roads, and stress-free driving. Planning to hit ‘The Big Apple’, prepare for a little chaos, some serious traffic, and a lesson in assertive driving! Wherever you travel in this beautiful, diverse state, you want to be sure you are aware of those ‘unspoken’ road rules that could be the difference between receiving a hefty fine or not.
  • When driving in NYC, drive with confidence and try not to hesitate otherwise you will be on the receiving end of many honking horns
  • A yield sign means you need to give way to traffic but you don’t necessarily have to stop.
  • Don’t enter an intersection unless you know you have time to pass through it. Instead, wait until the traffic ahead clears so that you don’t block the intersection.
  • Lock your car and leave nothing on display for opportune thieves to steal
  • When encountering police vehicles, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles, drivers are required to reduce their speed. On parkways, interstates, and other roads with multiple lanes, drivers are required to move from the lane adjacent to the emergency vehicle.

Parking rules

5 things you need to know about NY parking rules

New York parking rules are strict and persnickety, particularly in large cities. To avoid incurring unwanted fines, it’s important to understand just where and when you can park your vehicle during the day and at night. New York ticket inspectors have a reputation for being hard-nosed and unforgiving. Make sure you stay on the right side of them and don’t let your ignorance of local parking rules spoil your day.
  1. Fire hydrants: No stopping, standing, or parking within 5 meters of a fire hydrant.
  2. Double parking: Don’t stop beside or park next to an already parked car. This is considered to be double parking.
  3. Bridges: No parking in tunnels or on bridges
  4. Intersections: Never park at intersections, unless there’s a visible parking meter that permits you to stop, stand or park up.
  5. Driveways: In NY it’s illegal to park in front of a public or private driveaway. If you do, you’re likely to receive a fine or have your vehicle towed away.
  6. Pay fines within 48 hours: Failure to pay parking fines within 48 hours can lead to your vehicle being towed away.
Find out more about New York parking from the Official New York State website.

Window tint laws

Window tint laws are specific to different states in the US. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that one state’s window tint rules are the same as another's. Failure to comply with window tint laws results in large fines and window tints are now examined as a part of motor vehicle inspections. Note that some medical conditions qualify for an exemption from window tint laws. To learn more visit the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles website.
  • On a windshield only a 6-inch non-reflective tint strip can be applied
  • The the front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to pass through
  • The the backside windows of sedans must allow at least 70% of light to pass through. Unless the vehicle has an outside rearview mirror on both sides, this law also applies to the rear window
  • On the backside windows of the SUVs films of any darkness can be used

Helmet laws

Bicycle Helmets are compulsory in NYC for cyclists under 14, whether they’re riding the bike themselves or being given a ride by somebody else. In addition, children aged 1 to 4 must also wear a certified cycle helmet and ride in a specially designed child safety seat. Any violation of this law incurs a $50 fine. Some communities in NY state have their own specific laws regarding helmet use for cyclists. For example, in Rockland and Erie counties anybody (regardless of age) riding a bike on their county property must wear a helmet.
The fit of a bicycle helmet in New York is also legally specified. It should fit squarely on top of the head, covering the top of the forehead down to an inch above the eyebrows. The helmet should not be able to move around in any way on the head. For more info on cycling in New York, visit the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles website

Roads and highways

New York tolls: paying for a convenient ride

New York is infamous for its many toll roads and bridges, some of which are the most expensive in the US. Before hopping in your car and driving somewhere, it’s important to scrutinize your route and work out whether you’ll be encountering one of the state’s 30 toll roads. Toll charges differ depending on the number of axels on the vehicle, time of travel, vehicle type, mode of payment, and direction of travel. In general, the tolls in New York fall into three different categories:
  • New York State thruway system
  • New York toll Bridges
  • New York Toll Tunnels

New York state thruway

This is a controlled-access highway covering over 500 miles within the state of New York and is considered the fifth busiest toll road in the country. It goes from the New York City state line at Yonkers to the Pennsylvania state line at Ripley, passing through Ripley, Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo.

New York toll bridges

Be warned that toll bridges in New York can be expensive. The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in NY is now the most expensive toll bridge in the country, costing a whopping $19 to cross. NY toll bridges connect the state with New Jersey, across the border with Ontario, and metro areas within New York.

New York toll tunnels

Toll tunnels connect New York with New Jersey and other metro areas. For the toll tunnels that connect NY with New Jersey, tolls only apply for entry into New York and not when entering New Jersey.

U.S. Routes, starting in New York

There are 14 mainline routes and two official special routes that exist entirely or partially in New York.
Many U.S. routes start in the heart of ‘The Big Apple’. Interstate 78 crosses the Hudson River from New Jersey via the Holland Tunnel and finishes in Lower Manhattan at the tunnel plaza. The I-87 runs from The Bronx to the Canada-US border where it connects with Quebec Autoroute 15. Interstate 95 extends from the George Washington Bridge over the Hudson River to the Connecticut state line at Port Chester. It passes through New York City.

With summer driving conditions varying drastically from winter driving conditions in the state of New York, it’s important that drivers are aware of the differences in tire types and the time of year that they should look to change them. Most New Yorkers drive on all-season tires or performance tires from spring through to fall, but few would dispute the need for winter tires once the colder months set in. From mid-October onwards, the roads start to get icy with snow dumps increasingly likely. It’s important not to get caught short on icy roads with tires that don’t have the appropriate tread or grip.
A cost-effective way to afford both summer and winter tires is to buy barely used secondhand tires with plenty of grips left on them. At United Tires, we sell tires to suit all budgets, including used tires for under $50 and new tires for under $100. Alternatively, if you’re on a tight budget but unsure about purchasing well-used tires, we also sell tires driven once. And if you’re looking for just one or a set of new tires, enjoy our sign-up discount and free FedEx shipping right to your NY doorstep!
