Reno was named after a fallen soldier who’s never been to the place
Naming train stops after fallen soldiers was a tradition of the American Civil War. When the Central Pacific Railroad reached the town in 1868 (at the time acquired by M.C. Lake), it was auctioned and got the name of General Jesse Lee Reno of Virginia, who was killed at the Battle of South Mountain in Maryland. The famous Arch and first highways
The Biggest Little City in the World is an important place in the history of U.S. highways. Its Arch was first built back in 1926! The spot that later would become a famous landmark was set up during the Nevada Transcontinental Highway Exposition, celebrating the completion of Lincoln and Victory Highways. They ran along the corridors of today’s U.S. Route 50 and Interstate 80. After the exposition, the city council decided to leave the Arch as a gateway to Reno downtown, and one of the citizens came up with this brilliant slogan, winning $100.
Modern Reno highways
Historic Victory Highway and a branch of the Lincoln Highway used to serve Reno until the numbered highway system was established. U.S. Route 40 was the first numbered highway, passing along 4th Street in downtown Reno. Later on, it’s been replaced I-80. Reno also hosts the main country north-south highway: U.S. Route 395/Interstate 580.
Public transportation
Reno is served by a bus system provided by the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County (RTC). The main terminal is located on 4th Street, and two other ones — in Sparks and Southern Reno (Meadowood Mall). Reno–Tahoe International Airport is well connected to the other local destinations by a network of excursion and shuttle routes.
Reno’s history originates from a stopover of the First transcontinental railroad. Today the city is served by the Overland Route, Nevada–California–Oregon Railway, and the Virginia and Truckee Railroad. Amtrak also serves Reno: its California Zephyr train stops at Reno station.
