Did You know

Did you know that…

Louisiana’s crescent city, New Orleans is home to the world's oldest street car line!

The “St Charles” line first opened for service way back in 1835 and you originally got around in a street car pulled by a mule! The line has seen modernization over the last 2 centuries, even surviving World War II unlike many of its counterparts, and is a great draw for both locals and tourists alike to travel the original 13.2-mile long track on Route 12’s historic green line.

Hot rod manufacturing

Louisiana is home to a fiberglass car body and chassis manufacturer specializing in old-school hot rods. The car styles include the 1932 Ford 3 Window Coupe, the 1932 Ford 5 Window Coupe, and a selection of 1930’s roadsters. These 1930s cars were hugely popular in their era and still have a solid following now which sees car enthusiasts show them in specialized and classic car shows across the States. They also manufacture a range of muscle cars from the 60s and 70s, you can find them at Russ Nomore Street Rods Inc, 16105 LA-4, Chatham, LA 71226.

The average car ownership rate

Out of the 4.65 million residents of Louisiana, 3,425,435 are registered licensed drivers. According to DataUSA, as of 2019, most people in Louisiana drove alone to work with an average commute time of 25.5 minutes. With the average car ownership in Louisiana being 2 cars per household when it's time to replace your tires you can save big with affordable used tires at United Tires.

Longest road

Highway 1 or LA-1 was built in 1955 and starts in one of the most the South Western points of Louisiana, on a small stretch of land known as Grand Isle. It scoots though some of the local villages before joining the 3089 at Donaldsonville, heading north to the capital of the state Baton Rouge and following a similar trajectory to the I-49 thereafter. After passing through Shreveport, in the top Northwest corner of the state, it travels right through the three corners marker for the adjoining states of Texas and Arkansas before turning into Texas’ highway 77. Traversing 431.8 miles and cutting a diagonal line through the state, all the while connecting important towns and cities on Louisiana’s longest road.

Car racing in Louisiana

It's well known that The Pelican State peeps love NASCAR, rally driving, drag racing, and motorsports! All vehicle types including motorbikes, box cars, karting, stock cars, supercars and even monster trucks, Louisiana has no less than 23 racetracks scattered throughout it to accommodate them all. And don’t forget the horseracing tracks as well! Baton Rouge Raceway is the home track of the O’Reilly SUPR and had the pleasure of hosting the 2007 World of Outlaws Late Model Series.
There's also Thunder Road Raceway Park, Chatham Speedway, State Capitol Raceway, Leesville 171 Speedway, Boothill Speedway, No Problem Raceway, and Thunder Valley Speedway to name but a few. Some famous NASCAR drivers from years gone by were born in Louisiana including Skip Manning, Billy Hagan, Freddy Frayer, and most recently Hal Martin debuting in 2009 - 2014. In need of some competition or racing tires for your day on the tracks? United tires have all of these in stock as well as drag racing and an abundance of performance tires to suit every need.

Biggest karting track in the states

Meanwhile, move on over NASCAR as Louisiana is home to NOLO Motorsports Park. Which has the biggest karting track on the continent! Located just outside of New Orleans in Avondale, the park boasts 1.4 miles of karting track and can host 3 races simultaneously. If you feel the need for speed, you can bring your car and try out the 7.5-acre race pad, or indulge in a race around the tracks in a supercar from the NOLO fleet choosing from the likes of a Ferrari 458 Italia or a Lamborghini Huracan.

Mud bogging

Mud racing, mud running, mud drags or even just plain old mudding is one of Louisiana locals' newest favorite motorsport craze! The goal is to drive your vehicle through a huge mud pit with the winner going the longest distance! It's quite addictive and super fun, albeit pretty dang messy as well. One of the big draws is the variety of vehicles that can compete. We are talking anything from ATVs and other 4-wheelers to Jeeps and trucks, and even completely customized tractors have participated! There are a few places throughout the state that host these crazy events in LA with the biggest being the Louisiana Mudfest in Colfax, LA. If you love to get down and dirty and have a tonne of fun slaying mud puddles, this is definitely something worth checking out as a spectator or participant!

The longest bridge in the world

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway which connects Mandeville with Metairiein New Orleans is the longest bridge to run continuously over water in the entire world! The causeway is 23.8 miles long and has two parallel bridges crossing the Lake, and was built in 1956. It's known to be a bit of a scary experience for some as drivers are unable to see land for a huge stretch of road!

Special auto memorabilia

I can’t really call this a museum, even though it pretty much is! Cars of Yesteryears Ltd is a private collection in Metairie exploding with rare vintage collectible cars and auto accessories. There are supercar Lamborgini's and Ferrari’s mixed in with classic Fords and many more special vehicles from days gone by. Sadly this collection is not open to the public, however, you can see it with an invitation and some lucky enthusiasts might be able to arrange a private tour.

Historical Jackson military road

In 1820 Jackson’s military road was completed by general Andrew Jackson, after the victorious 1812 war with the British, The Battle of New Orleans. Jackson went on to be our 7th President after completion of the 483 miles long road that connected Nashville, Tennessee, with New Orleans over 200 hundred years ago. The original track ran started in New Orleans, around Lake Pontchartrain, and went up through Madisonville before crossing into Alabama. Jackson Highway was partially built on top of it in the 1920s (old HW 43). Nowadays, there are a few markers scattered across the country while a few highways have incorporated parts of the historic, victorious route.

What tires do you need for Louisiana weather?

What tires do you need for Louisiana weather?
What tires do you need for Louisiana weather?
Louisiana has a subtropical climate, with hot humid summers and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and pretty mild winters. Owing to its coastal location, tropical storms and hurricanes are also a constant threat for 6 months out of the year.

All season tires

So, with all the heat and wet rainy conditions, we recommend getting around on all season tires for the majority of the year. All season tires are designed with a harder rubber to grip the road in both dry and wet or even light snow conditions, which is rare here in the south but does happen in some parts of the state!

Better performing tires

Alternatively, if you drive a high performance sports car, and prefer a superior grip and handling in the heat of The Pelican States' unforgiving summers. You might prefer to switch to a set of summer tires, or one of our high or max performance tires during May - September when it's really hot. Summer tires are made from a softer rubber with sticky additive agents mixed in, to really help your tire stick to the road in Louisiana's hot and wet conditions. They are designed with a larger tread and therefore surface area to grip the road, which typically helps with handling and performance making your drive more pleasurable, especially for those with a rally driver racing style!
We recommend switching back to your set of all season tires in October when the weather cools and the roads aren't nearly as scorching as your summer tires will not perform anywhere near as well in the cooler months. The soft rubber will harden in cooler temps and will no longer safely grip the roads, making driving dangerous.
Though seasons in Louisiana are super distinct, like most Americans, Louisiana's people still prefer to drive on all-season tires, the most sought-after category on our site.

DRIVERS’ LOUISIANA GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Louisiana guide: practical information
Drivers’ Louisiana guide: practical information
This driver’s guide to Louisiana contains all the relevant information required to get around safely and legally within the state. It's full of information pertaining to driving and parking laws, live traffic reports, unspoken road rules, and much more!

Live traffic report

The roads in Louisiana, especially in the bigger cities can really get jammed up during peak traffic hours so, it’s always best to try to avoid driving during these times.
  • 511la Live Traffic News Channel is a great place to check out real-time traffic information to keep you ahead of the queues.
  • WRBZ News 2 Louisiana is another great site to check out road closures due to construction, accidents, and other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Local Conditions Louisiana is handy for checking out the weather forecasts as well as traffic reports across the towns of Louisiana.

Seasonal tire changeover

Year-round tires

Louisiana does not decree a seasonal tire changeover each year. With the hot and humid weather and an average of 60 inches of rain each summer, if you’ve got a good set of all-season tires on your car then you are good to go! They are designed for moderately hot and cool weather, nothing too extreme and handle well in both wet and dry road conditions, so are suitable all year round in Louisiana’s subtropical climate.

Hot season performance tires

However, if you drive a high-performance vehicle and you want tires to match both your car and driving skills, then we recommend switching to either performance, high performance, ultra high performance, or summer tires to ensure you get the most efficiency and best performance from your vehicle. If this is you, then you must switch back to your all-season tires at the end of summer, or when winter brings temperature drops of 45 °F and below.
Unsure of the perfect tire for your car or vehicle? Then give the team at United Tires a call on 1-888-566-6214 and let our experienced, professional staff assist you with your needs. They are available any time of the day or night to answer any questions, help with recommendations and assist you with choosing the right type of tire for your requirements.
Two sets of good tires can really help keep your vehicle performing at its best, and at UTires with our super affordable prices on used tires, you can own two sets for the price of one!

Driving Laws

You might not be aware of all the driving laws that Louisiana governs its roads by, so below are some of the important ones.
Cell Phone Laws - R.S. 32:300.6, R.S. 32:300.7, R.S. 32:300.5 - you cannot use a mobile phone in any instance while driving your car. Texting is completely outlawed and fines start at $175 for first offenses. If you hold a regular class ‘E’ license and are above the age of 19 then you are permitted to take ‘hands-free’ calls.
Open Container Law - R.S. 32:300 - You cannot have any open alcoholic beverage while driving or occupying a moving vehicle.
Blood Alcohol Readings - R.S. 14:98 - BAC limit is .08 for all drivers over the age of 21, however for all drivers under 21 the BAC is .02. If you are pulled over and read above these limits you will be charged with a DWI.
Driver’s License Seizure - R.S. 32:414 - If you do get charged with a DWI then your license will be suspended for 1 year as a first offender. Subsequent offenses will result in 2 years suspension for the second DWI, and so on.
Child Endangerment - R.S. 14:98(J) - If you are charged with a DWI and you have 12 years or younger child in the vehicle, the minimum mandatory sentence will not be suspended and you will find yourself doing jail time for a minimum of 10 days or as much as 6 months.
Seatbelt Laws - R.S. 32:295.1 - It is illegal to ride in a vehicle without a seatbelt properly fastened.
License & Insurance Laws - R.S. 32:52, R.S. 32:880 - It's illegal to drive in Louisiana without a license or insurance, and you will be fined on the spot as a minimum if you are found to break either one of these laws.
Headlight Laws - R.S. 32:301, R.S. 32:322 - You are required to drive with lights on from dusk till dawn when there are insufficient light conditions, and when it's raining hard enough your windshield wipers are working overtime.

Unspoken Road Rules

When driving on any highway, the left-hand lane is the fast lane! This is just one of the many unspoken road rules governing the roads in Bayou State.
This one is very obvious, however, it isn’t always observed in other states so important to note it here. Out of respect for the deceased, you need to pull over to the side of the road and let any funeral procession pass through.
Another is that in Louisiana, directions are given using landmarks and times, rather than distance in miles. For example, head straight towards the bayou for about 8 minutes then swing a left once you pass the petrol station!
Lastly, give drivers acknowledgment with a little wave! Did someone just let you in at a busy intersection? Give a little wave of appreciation and spread good vibes on our roads.

Parking rules

In Louisiana, you are prohibited from stopping, standing, or parking over a public or private driveway, even just partially. You cannot park your car on a sidewalk, in an intersection, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, or within 20 feet of a crosswalk. Double Parking is illegal and a fineable offense, along with those mentioned earlier. You also cannot park in a bus lane or at broken parking meters or ones covered with yellow bags indicating special events and therefore, no parking. Parking fines for these obstructions and more range from $30 right up to $500!

Window tint laws

Enacted in 1993, Louisiana’s laws on window tints may seem a little complex compared to other states, due to having different allowances for different vehicle types. This should explain all you need to know!
The percent of visible light allowed through your tinted windows is called VLT: Visible Light Transmission. The percentage of light allowed through your film and glass in Louisiana is very specific and is different for sedans, SUVs, and vans.

Sedan Tint Darkness

The windshield can have a non-reflective tint above the manufacturer's AS-1 line or top 5 inches. Front Side Windows must allow more than 40% of light in, the Back Side Windows need to allow more than 25% of light in, whereas its a 12% allowance for the Rear Window.

SUV and Van Tint Darkness

Again, the windshield can have a non-reflective tint above the manufacturer's AS-1 line or top 5 inches. The Front Side Windows must allow more than 40% of light in. Whereas the Back Side and Rear Windows can have any desired level of VLT.
When it comes to tinting reflection, all 3 vehicle types must not exceed 20% reflectivity on both Front and Back Side Windows.
Interestingly, there are no restrictions on side mirror tinting.
There are some other important things to note when it comes to tinting rules in Louisiana, including:
  • Red or amber color tints are illegal
  • All tinting film must be made in the state of Louisiana and certified accordingly
  • You must have the certifying manufacturers stickers applied between the film and glass on the driver's side window, this is a legal requirement
You can see the full report on Louisiana car tinting laws. Or if you are interested in learning more in-depth about all aspects of tinting, including windows, headlight tints, car wraps, and even commercial tinting, you’ll find all of that and more here.

Helmet laws

While in the state of Louisiana, as per Louisiana Revised Statues 32:190. You and your passenger must wear a well-padded helmet with a working chin strap and a visor at all times. Regardless if your passenger is seated behind you, or next to you in a sidecar.
This law applies to all motorcycles, regardless of size or cubic capacity (cc), motorized cycles, and motor-driven bikes.
Another important mention is the eye protection law 32:190.1. In addition to motorcycle helmets, Louisiana also requires eyewear protection for all motorcyclists, unless you have a high enough windshield in place.
There are several different styles of protective eyewear including goggles, safety glasses, or face shields.

Roads and highways

Louisiana’s highways and roads are imperative for connecting its major cities and smaller towns alike, from one side of the state to the other, as well as making interstate trips to neighboring states a breeze.
Interstate 10 - The I-10 is the main West to East highway for Louisiana. It traverses the entire width of the state, starting West in the border town of Orange. It connects most major cities in The Pelican State including, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, Layfayette, and New Orleans, and finishes at the Mississippi state line.
Interstate 12 - Louisiana’s I-12 highway, is actually located entirely within Louisiana! It starts in Baton Rouge and extends in an East-West direction to Slidell where it interchanges with both the I-10 & I-59. Traversing through the city of Hammond, it is used by many as a by-pass for other busy New Orleans roads.
