Did you know that?..

The gas pump was invented in Fort Wayne

The gas pump is a ubiquitous sight at gas stations around the world, but it was not always so. In fact, the first gas pump was invented in Fort Wayne, Indiana by Sylvanus Bowser in 1885. Bowser's invention helped to make pumping gas more efficient as the device measured the liquid as it pumped it. Bowser Avenue in Fort Wayne, his hometown, is named after him. The next time you fill up your tank, take a moment to think of Sylvanus Bowser and the important role he played in the history of the automobile.

Fort Wayne is an old city that was founded in 1794 and has a strong history of urban planning, especially with the road layout. It is also home to many automobile manufacturers, to this day.

Boulevards and parkways

The layout of the city as we know it has quite modern roots, with master planning taking place in the early 20th century, developing a "park and boulevard plan", which involved creating a system of parkways and boulevards which can be seen to this day. These routes connect the city’s rivers and now ten of the boulevards and four parkways are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Auto manufacturing

The city has a strong tradition of automobile manufacturing and that continues today with many auto parts manufacturers based here.
Several cars are manufactured here with General Motors Fort Wayne Assembly being the largest car manufacturing plant in the city. Here they make both the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Sierra, perhaps the reason why the Silverado is the city’s favorite car!
Summit City is also home to a Multimatic plant. This company not only makes auto components but also builds custom race cars and supercars.
There are several other vehicle component manufacturers in the city including:
  1. Dana Inc, makers of axels, transmissions, driveshafts, and digital equipment for all types of cars from conventional to electric.
  2. Faurecia Clean Mobility makes emissions control systems for vehicles.
  3. ElringKlinger, a German company, makes metal layer cylinder-head gaskets.
  4. Lippert where they make components for the RV industry.
  5. Mitsuba is a Japanese company that makes electrical components for windshield wipers, windows, mirrors, fuel pumps, and pressure regulators.
  6. Voss makes line and connection technology for commercial, construction, agriculture, and passenger vehicles.

Tire manufacturing

Fort Wayne is also home to a BF Goodrich Manufacturing plant. This tire company is now owned by Michelin, and in their Summit City factory, they make car and pickup truck tires.
If you’re looking for BF Goodrich tires, Fort Wayne United Tires has a selection of new and used available at the best prices online. What tires do you need for Fort Wayne weather?

What tires do you need for Fort Wayne weather?
What tires do you need for Fort Wayne weather?
Most drivers in Fort Wayne will have two sets of tires for the year, as the city’s weather is pretty typical for the Midwest.
Temperatures in spring are very fresh and pleasant, although you do sometimes get severe spring and summer thunderstorms with heavy rain. In the summer, temperatures usually hover around 80 °F, with occasional heat waves pushing things into the 90s. The fall is a beautiful time of year here, as the leaves change color and the air gets crisp.
For these three seasons, most people choose to fit their vehicle out with a set of all-season tires, which are ideal for the temperature ranges, and occasional very wet roads. They can even cope with surprise spring snow flurries and early fall frosts. Drivers of performance cars, like those made by local company Multimatic, might prefer to use summer tires for the superior handling they give when driving in a more sporty fashion.
Winter can be tough, though, with temperatures often below freezing. On average, the city only sees about 30 inches of snow each year, with January being the snowiest month. This means that it is an extremely good idea to use a set of specialist winter tires or snow tires for these months, to make driving in and around the city much safer.

DRIVERS’ FORT WAYNE GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Fort Wayne guide: practical information
Drivers’ Fort Wayne guide: practical information
Even though you won’t find many big hills in Summit City, it’s still a great place to drive around. And with these handy hints on driving laws, major highways, and when to change your tires for winter, you’ll enjoy your ride even more.

Live traffic report

Thanks to its great investment in the road network traffic in Fort Wayne is rarely bad, however during weather events, such as thunderstorms or heavy snow it’s important to check the traffic reports:

Seasonal tire changeover

Like much of the Midwest, winters can be snowy in Fort Wayne, making a seasonal tire changeover very advisable. While a few hardy souls will choose to drive in all-season tires year-round, this can mean days where you can’t get your car out due to heavy snow, or risky driving if you have to stray from the main, plowed roads. However, if you do choose to take this option, please ensure your tires are marked with M&S, meaning they can cope with some mud and snow.

Spring through fall

The tire of choice for the budget-conscious driver for the majority of the year is an all-season tire because it offers great durability and handles well in a wide range of conditions. If you are choosing this option it’s best to put these tires on around late March and take them off again in late October or early November, depending on the year.
Some drivers, do prefer to use summer tires for the warmer months as they offer great handling on hot pavement and allow for a much sportier style of driving than all-season tires. However, as these tires are designed for the hotter months, once temperatures drop below 45 °F they are no longer recommended as the rubber can harden in the cold, making you more likely to skid. In the city, you can put summer tires on your car from around late April to early October.

Winter

As winters in Fort Wayne can see a lot of snowfall it’s generally best to use specialist winter tires for the months of October/November through to March/April. These can be either snow tires or ice tires depending on where you’ll be driving. But generally, snow tires are a good bet for the winters. They are made from a type of rubber that doesn’t harden in the cold, so they can grip the road better. They also have a special tread pattern to deal with snowy or slushy roads.

Driving Laws

Part of keeping safe on the roads in Fort Wayne is sticking to the rules of the road. Here are a few you should be aware of:
  1. Left lane hogging, is not allowed on multi-lane highways. If someone is driving faster than you, you need to pull over to the right to let them go by.
  2. Probationary license holders are not allowed to drive without supervision during the hours of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays to Thursdays and 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
  3. No phones at all while driving for drivers under 21 years old. Drivers 21 and older can use their phones only hands-free while driving.
  4. Points for moving violations are cumulative over a 2-year period, and if you get more than 18 points in that time you will be subject to fines or suspension of driving privileges.
If you want to learn more about driving in the Summit City you can read the official state driving manual on the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles' official website.

  1. Downtown street parking, is free after 5 p.m. and on weekends.
  2. Cost of parking downtown for a full day shouldn’t be more than $8.
  3. Parking lots and garages are dotted throughout the city, some of which are free, and others are paid, depending on the location.
  4. Downtown attractions like the Botanical Conservatory, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, or Science Central have options for free parking.
  5. Paving projects, tree removals, or water mains work will have no parking signs posted nearby at least 24 hours in advance of the work.
The official Vist Fort Wayne website has a great parking guide for the different districts of the city.

Window tint laws

Window tinting can make your car much more pleasant in sunny weather but it’s important that you stick to the relevant window tinting regulations when getting your vehicle tinted.
The rules include:
  • Windshield tint can only be above the AS-1 line and must allow more than 30% of light in.
  • Tints for all other windows, must allow at least 30% of light in.
  • Reflective tints are only allowed to have a total solar reflectance of visible light of up to 25%.
Learn more about tinting your vehicle windows, including details of the latest products and advice on how to tint your windows.

Helmet laws

Fort Wayne uses the Indiana helmet regulations which are not very comprehensive:
  • Motorcycle helmets and eye protection are only required for learner drivers and drivers and passengers under the age of 18.
  • Bicycle helmets, are not required by law at all in the city or state.

Roads and highways

The road system in Fort Wayne is very well planned, thanks in part to the urban planning of the early 20th century, as well as much more modern urban planning designed to keep traffic flowing easily.
The city has several major highways including two Interstates and four US Routes.

Interstates

  • I-69 goes north to south to the west of the city passing through the districts of Brierewood Hills and Crestwood. To the north of the city, the I-69 passes by Auburn and Angola before heading into Michigan. To the south the I-69 passes by Indianapolis before ending in Evansville, just north of the Kentucky state line.
  • I-469 goes around the east side of Fort Wayne. It is a loop off of I-69 and passes by New Haven to the south and Brookside Estates to the north before rejoining I-69.

US Routes

  • US 24 goes northeast to west joining up with the I-469 and then the I-69 to skirt around Fort Wayne. To the northwest US 24 heads into Ohio, going to Toledo. To the west of the city the US 24 heads off to Illinois and the city of Peoria.
  • US 27 goes south to north passing through the downtown area of Fort Wayne before ending its run to the north of the city at a junction with the I-69. To the south, the US 27 runs parallel to the Ohio border before crossing over just north of Cincinnati. Eventually, the highway makes its way south to Miami, Florida.
  • US 30 goes east to west joining up with the I-69 as it passes by Fort Wayne. It is a major route for traffic passing through northern Ohio and going on to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to the east, and heading to Chicago, Illinois in the west.
  • US 33 goes north to south on the west side of Fort Wayne joining up with the I-69 and then the I-469. To the south it passes by Decater and Pleasant Mills before heading out of state at the Ohio border. To the north it goes through Elkhart where it ends.
When driving through or around Summit City, be sure to familiarize yourself with these highways so you can get where you're going without any trouble!

Scenic drives

Not every city has plenty of green spaces within a short drive of the city center, but as the residents know, there are plenty of beautiful scenic drives around this beautiful northern Indiana city.
“Visit Fort Wayne”, the official city’s tourism website, recommends seven great scenic drives that will take you through nature and greenery as well as some of the city’s historical landmarks.

Fun facts

  1. In 1891 the city saw its first electric car, which went at the great speed of 12 miles per hour and was powered by a battery.
  2. Don’t try wearing taillights in the city, unless you’re a motor vehicle. Pedestrians wearing them at night, while crossing a highway, can be arrested.

FAQ

Where to buy tires in Fort Wayne?

The best tire shop in Fort Wayne is actually online, in the comfort of your own home. You’ll find the best discount tire, Fort Wayne on the United Tires website. Prices are matched daily to ensure you always get the cheapest price, but you won’t have to compromise on quality. With a huge selection of used and new tires, all with free FedEx shipping, you’ll find exactly the tires you need, whatever your vehicle and driving style.

What tires are best for Fort Wayne?

All-season tires are a good choice from spring through fall for most drivers in Fort Wayne. These tires are designed to provide good traction and handling in a variety of weather and road conditions.
However, when winter arrives, all-season tires can start to lose their effectiveness in the snow and ice. In these conditions, snow tires are a better option. Snow tires are designed to provide superior traction and braking in cold weather, making them essential for safe driving in Fort Wayne's winters.

Do I need winter tires in Fort Wayne?

No, while winter tires are not essential, they are strongly recommended. This is because the city experiences a fair amount of snow and ice throughout the winter months.
Winter tires are specifically designed to provide better traction in these conditions. They have a deeper tread than regular tires and are made from a softer rubber compound that remains flexible even in cold temperatures. As a result, winter tires can help to improve your traction and braking performance on snow and ice. While they are not required by law, they can be a valuable addition to your vehicle’s safety in the snowy winter months.
