Spring through fall

Winter

1. U-turns allowed: You can make u-turns in most places in Indiana, with a couple of caveats. If there is a no u-turns sign that should be obeyed, and if you want to make a u-turn make sure there’s at least 750 feet of visibility in both directions.
2. Police stop: If you happen to get pulled over by the police you should always turn on the interior lights of your vehicle so you are clearly visible.
3. Watch your speed: While Interstate speed limits are generally 70 mph, keep an eye out for signs, especially in urban areas, where the limits can drop down to 50 mph.
4. Watch your horse’s speed: As well as cars, Indiana also has speed limits for horses, as they count as vehicles. And that limit is 10 mph to be exact!
5. Pickup truck rides: It’s illegal for passengers to travel in the back of pickup trucks - unless you happen to have proper seatbelts or safety restraints in there!

• Sidewalks: You’re not allowed to park on a sidewalk, or even with one tire up on the curb!
• Driveways: You cannot park where your vehicle will block a driveway.
• Bridges and tunnels: No parking at all in tunnels or on bridges.
• Against traffic: For street parking, you should always park in the same direction as traffic, never against it.
• Construction: You can’t park alongside or opposite road construction or excavation if it will obstruct traffic in any way.

• Motorcycle helmets: Learner motorcycle drivers and any drivers or passengers under the age of 18 have to wear a helmet and eye protection.
• Bicycle helmets: Indiana has no laws regarding the wearing of bicycle helmets.

Interstates

• I-64 enters from Louisville, Kentucky in the southeast corner of Indiana. It heads west past Evansville before crossing into Illinois.
• I-65 starts just over the Illinois state line in Gary Indiana in the northwest corner of the state. It heads south, passing Lafayette and heading through Indianapolis before crossing over to Kentucky at Louisville.
• I-69 has two segments in Indiana with a gap around Indianapolis. To the north it goes into Michigan and south of Indianapolis it goes as far as Evansville where it currently ends.
• I-70 enters the state from Illinois passing by Terre Haute in the west of Indiana. It heads west through Indianapolis and crosses into Ohio near Richmond.
• I-74 enters from Illinois in the west-central part of Indiana. It heads east through Indianapolis before turning south and crossing into Ohio near Cincinnati.
• I-80 & I-90 travel together along the northern state border of Indiana, entering from Illinois and passing through Gary and South Bend before crossing into Ohio near Angola. The I-80 is a transcontinental Interstate that goes from San Francisco all the way to New Jersey. The I-90 the longest transcontinental Interstate in the US, going from Seattle to Boston. In the Hoosier State, it’s known as Indiana East-West Toll Road.
• I-94 enters Indiana from Michigan near Michigan City in the north of the state. It heads west through Gary before crossing into Illinois near Hammond.
• I-265 is a loop highway for Louisville, Kentucky that goes through Indiana for a short section, joining up with the I-64 just west of Clarksville.
• I-275 is a beltway around Cincinnati, Ohio that enters Indiana for a few miles on its journey around the metropolitan area.
• I-465 is a beltway around Indianapolis. It intersects with the I-65, the I-69, I-70, and I-74, as well as the I-865 spur.
• I-469 is a partial bypass around the east side of Fort Wayne. It joins with the I-69 both to the north and south of the city.
• I-865 is a connector highway joining I-65 to the I-465 to the north of Indianapolis.

Toll roads

• Indiana is number two for automotive manufacturing in the whole of the USA.
• Indiana is home to most of the country’s RV manufacturing - in fact, almost 80 % of RVs are made in the Hoosier State.
