Illinois is a Midwest state that lies in the Interior Plains, its topography is predominantly flat, but the weather here can be quite extreme. Winter storms, tornados, and waves of heat or cold — all of this determine the style and the traditions of driving in the state.
In most of Illinois, Rockford and Chicago being perfect examples, the climate is humid continental: hot, humid summers and cold winters. The southern part of the state, roughly south of Carbondale, best represented by Metropolis and Cairo, has a humid subtropical climate with more moderate winters.

Drivers’ Illinois guide: practical information
This section is your cheat sheet on driving in the state of Illinois: here, you will find the most important traffic rules, key points of the tinting law, local driving etiquette peculiarities, our suggestions for scenic drives, and much more!
Live traffic report
Before planning a route in Illinois, it is highly recommended to check the traffic conditions beforehand. Traffic in the state, especially in its biggest cities, can be really bad! Here are a few online resources that will help you to avoid traffic jams:
With two distinct seasons, Illinois’ climate is calling for the tire changeover, and yet, according to the United Tires sales department, Illinoisans tend to drive on all-season tires all year round. It is a smart choice: the versatile performance of these tires allows a safe and comfortable ride in mild, not-too-extreme weather conditions. Choose from our selection of over 50,000 all-season tires! But for securing yourself and your family a super safe ride, consider a seasonal tire changeover.
Warm-season changeover
The warm season in Illinois lasts from early June to late September. But usually, we recommend considering a tire changeover around April-May, depending on the weather conditions. If you live in an area where the summer temperature holds steadily above 45 °F, consider getting tires with a higher performance than the all-season ones. The steady grip with the hot road surface, the good handling, and the great aquaplaning even in the heavy rain are guaranteed by the summer, or performance tires. Choose them if you prefer to be in total control of the road!
Cold-season changeover
The cold season in Illinois begins in early December and lasts until the beginning of March, with daily temperatures below 45 °F. When the weather gets this cold, and the road’s surface gets icy, you may want to change the tires for the winter ones that won’t go stiff and “freeze”. Winter tires are designed from a softer rubber compound that allows better grip on the icy road surface. Their tread pattern is brutal, with deeper grooves for better tracking in snow or slush. Check out our selection of quality used winter tires, choose the right model for your vehicle, and save up to 50% of your tire budget!
United Tires customer service is here to assist you with a seasonal tire choice. Give us a call at 773-840-0282 or call toll-free at 1-888-566-6214, let us know your location, driving style, and conditions, and we will offer you the best tire deals! And remember, that all Illinoisans benefit from our headquarters location in Chicago: you get the fastest FedEx Ground shipping in all of the U.S.!
Driving Laws
Here are some Illinois rules of the road that you should know before starting your road trip here:
Only drivers over 19 years of age can use hands-free, but if the driver is under 19 years of age, only single-ear hands-free devices are allowed
Drivers must at all times yield to pedestrians, funeral processions, as well as in any situation where accidents can be avoided by yielding
No loud music coming from your car in Illinois is allowed. 75 feet is the least legal distance from the sound source to people who can hear it
Leaving a distance of 3 feet or more if passing a cyclist or a pedestrian is a must
Driving under the influence of medical cannabis is illegal in Illinois
Passing a school bus on a 2nd lane while its lights are flashing and/or when it’s loading and unloading passengers is a serious offense in Illinois and can lead to a three-month license suspension
When the windshield wipers are in use due to weather conditions, headlights must be switched on
The use of radar jamming devices is strictly prohibited in Illinois for any vehicles
Unspoken Road Rules
Illinois has many rural roads, and not all the rural intersections are marked or have good visibility. Be prudent and careful on the rural roads of Illinois, but you’ve got to be proactive when driving in Chicago, drive with intention, and insert your car’s nose into the traffic when joining the road. In Illinois, when taking a U-turn, the driver should allow 500 feet of visibility in either direction and make sure he won’t disturb the traffic flow.
Parking rules
In the state of Illinois, no parking is allowed:
In front of a driveway, on a bridge, on railroad tracks, in highway tunnels, on controlled access roads, on crossovers
On the paved roads outside of private residences or businesses, if the driver can park someplace else
On the sidewalks
Within 15 feet of a fire hydrant
Within 30 feet of a traffic signal, flashing beacon, or yield sign
No double-parking on the road beside a parked vehicle
Look for the signposts! If the local parking law differs from the state’s, the according sign would state the rule.
Window tint laws
Key tinting regulations in Illinois
Illinois window tint law allows window tint darkness for sedans not over 35% of VLT (visible light transmittance) for all windows, apart from the windshield. For SUVs and “multipurpose vehicles,” front windows should let 50% of light in, but at the same time, films of any degree of darkness can be used for rear windows.
Windshield tint is illegal in Illinois, car owners are only allowed to have a non-reflective sun visor strip 6 inches wide of 70% VLT (visible light transmittance), which is generous, compared to the allowed width of the visor strip is 4”-5” in other states. Learn more about tinting regulations in IL.

Helmet laws
The use of helmets is not enforced by the law in Illinois. Still, there’s an eye protection law (625 ILCS 5/11-1404) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 11-1404) Sec. 11-1404., stating: “The operator of a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle or moped and every passenger thereon shall be protected by glasses, goggles or a transparent shield.”
Yet, there were some cases when the judge would consider it to be negligent for the rider not to have the helmet on whilst riding.
It’s up to you, we suggest choosing safety and protecting yourself at all times.
