Wilmington is credited with being the first Swedish settlement in North America. This city has evolved into a popular tourist destination for car enthusiasts. Wilmington's historical Amtrak Station, Goober's Garage, and Western Railroad are all great places to go back in time and learn more about its automotive history.

Joseph R. Biden Jr. Railroad Station

Wilmington is home to one of Amtrack's busiest stations. It was completed in 1908 and was designed by renowned architects Frank Furness and Allen Evans. Because of its Romanesque style and powerful industrial and decorative elements, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. For more than a decade, Friends of the Furness Railroad District has advocated for the preservation of the Wilmington station, former B&O depot, and other Riverfront-area buildings designed by Frank Furness.
In 2011, the station was renovated and rededicated. It is now named after President Joseph R. Biden Jr., who rode the rails an estimated 7,800 times during his 36 years in the United States Senate.

Goober’s Garage

Tom Hannum and Vance Kershner, owners of Buckley's Tavern in Wilmington, decided to show Kershner's car collection in the Goober's Garage, a 100-year-old building that has been transformed into a neon-lit display case. The garage is directly across the street from Goober's Diner, a two-story, 80-seat stainless-steel retro 1950's diner. Hannum and Kershner named the restaurant and garage after an old "Andy Griffith Show" character.
Although Goober's Garage is not open to the public on a regular basis, dining customers are able to see the cars on special occasions. Do you treat your car like it's part of a collection? Purchase a set of tires that meet your needs. Here at UTires, all of our tires are subjected to a two-stage inspection: visual, in which our team manually checks them; and automatic, in which we use water and air-pressure tests to identify any flaws. Buy now and save up to 50%!

Wilmington & Western Railroad

On October 19, 1872, the Wilmington & Western Railroad began transporting goods and passengers between the Red Clay Valley's small towns and mills. It became one of the East Coast's premier scenic tourist railroads in 1966, transporting hundreds of thousands of passengers along the same route for romantic evenings, holiday celebrations, or a relaxing afternoon train ride with family and friends.

All-season tires

Wilmington has a mild climate. Summers are hot and humid, and winters are cool to cold, with consistent precipitation throughout the year. The highest temperature in the summer is 86 °F in July, and the lowest temperature in the winter is 25 °F in January. The annual rainfall is 45 inches, and the annual snowfall is 13 inches. Wilmington's most pleasant months are September, June, and May, while January and February are the least pleasant.
Given that the highest and lowest temperatures are not extreme, the best option is to use all-season tires, which look like a combination of a summer and a winter tire. The outer edge of the tread, like the summer tire, is designed to improve cornering grip. And, like the winter tire, sipes run along the inside of the tire to improve traction in snow and slush, while wide grooves help water drain when driving in rain.

DRIVERS’ WILMINGTON GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Drivers’ Wilmington guide: practical information
Drivers’ Wilmington guide: practical information
If you are planning a long ride along Wilmington, look at our touring tires, which have a relatively wide tread and can make more surface contact with the road, resulting in smoother driving and a quieter ride. Then, follow these driving laws and recommendations:

Live traffic report

Sports tournaments generate a lot of traffic in Wilmington. With large crowds on the streets, state transportation and police direct traffic and crowds. If you go out, be cautious when driving along Interstate 95 because speed cameras are looking for drivers who are going too fast in the work zone. Besides, consider the following travel advisories:

Seasonal tire changeover

July is the hottest month in Wilmington, with an average high temperature of 86 °F, making it cooler than the majority of the state. Summers are hot, humid, and rainy; winters are bitterly cold and snowy; and it is partly cloudy all year. The temperature typically ranges from 26 °F to 86 °F throughout the year, rarely falling below 13 °F or rising above 93 °F.

Tires for summer

Although it is recommended to use all-season tires in Wilmington, in July you can switch to summer tires, which have larger tread blocks and fewer sipes. This improves handling, braking stability, and braking distance by increasing the amount of rubber in contact with the road.

Tires for winter

When the temperature falls below 27 °F, winter tires can be used to perform optimally on rain, ice, snow, and dry but cold roads. Their softer compound allows them to grip roads better in colder temperatures than summer and all-season tires, which have a harder compound.

Driving Laws

The Delaware Code Title 21 explains the traffic rules that apply not only in Wilmington but all over the state. After reading it, we’ve selected the most important legal norms for you:
  1. The vehicle intending to turn to the left shall give the right-of-way to any car approaching from the opposite direction that is close enough to cause an accident.
  2. It is prohibited to drive on a sidewalk or bicycle lane except on a permanent, authorized temporary driveway.
  3. Drivers must warn pedestrians by sounding the horn to avoid colliding with them.
  4. Drivers must have insurance for all vehicles on the road.
  5. Driving in excess of a reasonable and prudent speed is illegal in Delaware.
  6. Drivers cannot drive any vehicle with a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of others.
  7. It is illegal to use a cell phone or any other handheld electronic device while driving, unless using a hands-free device.
  8. No one may drive a car while under the influence of alcohol or any other drug.

Roads and highways

The most important Dover roads and highways are U.S. Route 13, Interstate 95, State Route 2, State Route 4, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. These highways connect the city to the rest of the state.

U.S. Route 13

It is Delaware's main north-south highway. It stretches from Maryland's Delmar, Sussex County, to Pennsylvania's Claymont, New Castle County. Many important DE cities and towns, including Wilmington, Dover, and Seaford, are connected by U.S. Route 13.

I-95

This is a major interstate highway that runs through Wilmington from the Christina River to U.S. 202 in Brandywine Hundred. The Christina Riverfront and Justison Landing areas along the Wilmington Viaduct parallel the Amtrak Northeast Corridor.

SR 2

State Route 2, also known as the Kirkwood Highway, was established in 1936 as the primary route between Newark and Wilmington along Capitol Trail and Wilmington Avenue. By 1941, the route had been completed as a Marshallton bypass.

SR 4

From Interstate 95 north to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, this route serves as a commuter route west to Richardson Park and Newport, as well as a gateway to Downtown Wilmington. This state route enters Wilmington along Maryland Avenue east.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard

From Jackson Street in the Hilltop neighborhood to King Street at LOMA, this road is a four to six lane boulevard. The boulevard connects Interstate 95's 4th Street and Maryland Avenue off-ramps into Downtown. Before 1989, this road was known as Wilmington Boulevard.
