The first roads were built to bring supplies to the gold diggers
As the research paper “A History of Boulder's Transportation, 1858 - 1984”, prepared for the Transportation Division City of Boulder, Colorado, by Phyllis Smith says, “Young Boulder's economic survival was dependent upon the construction of mountain wagon roads to gold and silver mines”. The first party of gold-seekers arrived in Boulder in 1858, and there was no single road to guide them. Besides the access to the gold mines, transportation was necessary for supply delivery to the diggers’ settlements. This was what kickstarted the process of the creation of the local transportation system.
A military road through the Sunshine Canyon, multiple attempts to conquer Bear and Gregory Canyon, dozens of bridges built along the way —all that was just the beginning. When silver was found in Caribou in 1869, the process sped up, and new roads connected important points on the local map.
Boulder City was incorporated under Colorado Territory in 1871, and Pearl Street started getting some improvements too. The sewage system, the wooden sidewalks, and the telegram posts were established.
The first railroad in Boulder
Buy it was the development of the coal industry that eventually brought railroad service to Boulder. By 1873, not only did the Denver and Boulder Valley build a line to town, but also the Colorado Central Railroad had completed a line from Golden north to Boulder. The Golden, Boulder and Caribou Railroad, completed in 1878, delivered coal from Marshall. And a few businessmen started exploring the possibility of building a narrow gauge railroad into the mountains.
The narrow gauge road
In April 1883, the little train had its first run from Denver to Boulder at 8,000 feet above sea level. This “little wonder” could more efficiently bring down the precious ores that mountain freighters had struggled to deliver over bad roads. It even became fashionable to go for a day's picnic to Sunset by narrow gauge!
The first streetcar line
The Boulder Street Railway began its operation in 1899, running from the Depot on Fourteenth Street to Baseline Road, the edge of the Chautauqua grounds. A few new lines were open soon.
Beginning of the modern era
In 1935, the first traffic count was completed: a town resident counted 357 cars on Valmont in one day! The 1940s era turned Boulder from a town into a city. And in 1944, road maintenance seemed a usual city expenditure: $29.196.05 was spent that year. Boulder’s first traffic light was installed at Broadway and Arapahoe in the early 1940s.
