Did You know

Did you know that…

Four of ten cars-bestsellers are produced in Alabama!

Four of the ten nationwide best-selling American-made cars are produced in Alabama! It’s no surprise, as the state hosts four major car manufacturing plants — Mercedes-Benz US International, Inc. in Vance, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama in Lincoln, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing in Montgomery, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama, Inc., and Mazda Toyota Manufacturing U.S.A., Inc. in Huntsville!

Automotive Alabama at a glance
When you were born, Alabama (most likely) wasn’t so big on car production. But it all changed in 1993 when Mercedes-Benz opened its assembly plant near Vance and produced its first Mercedes M-Class in 1997.
In 2022 the state is an important U.S. auto manufacturing hub with Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI), Toyota, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama (HMA), Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA), and Autocar (maker of heavy-duty work trucks) assembly plants operating here. Alabama also hosts multiple Goodyear, BF Goodrich, and Michelin dealerships and service shops in the main cities of the state, and a Millennium Industrial Tire shop in Florence.

The 5th top state for the production of cars and light trucks

Over 1 million cars and light trucks are being produced by Mercedes, Honda, and Hyundai in Alabama annually, and soon, when Mazda Toyota is in full operation, the number will increase to 1,3 million vehicles per year. These figures make Alabama the 5th U.S. most productive auto manufacturing state. Add 1,5 million (soon to be 2 million) engines produced here per year (by Mercedes, Honda, and Hyundai), and you will feel a full scale of the state’s auto potential.
The carmakers create a robust employment market: over 40,000 Alabamians are currently occupied at the assembly plants. A big role in the boost from just a couple of thousand people played the Mercedes-Benz opening its facility in 1993.
In just a generation the Heart of Dixie became automotive… well, maybe not a heart, but a super important part of the United States. Over two decades more than 10 million sedans, compacts, SUVs, pickups, and trucks have been produced here. In fact, vehicles are the number one export product for the state!

It has been also happening during the first years of the automotive industry boom

The beginning of the XX century has also been dynamic auto production-wise here Down South! Everybody wanted to build cars those days, and Great Southern Automobile Co., and Preston Motor Co., based in Birmingham, have become American pioneers. Great Southern Automobile Co. was founded in 1909 and produced cars, car parts, and buses, and Preston Motor Co. worked in 1919-1923 and produced so-called “Premocars”. Both companies did not operate long, but definitely set the tone!
The last but not least historical car manufacturer is the Keller Motor Corp., operating in 1947-1949. Founded by George Keller, it was inspired by two brothers, united by a dream to restore the three Super Chiefs wagons. Keller went further and wanted to enhance the memorable design with the fast-speed cars, but the enterprise didn’t live long either. George Keller suddenly died in 1949. Two surviving cars are owned by private collectors.

The other car racing tracks in the state are — South Alabama Speedway, North Alabama Speedway, East Alabama Motor Speedway, Barber Motorsports Park, Montgomery Speedway, Deep South Speedway, and many others. Where to buy used tires in Alabama

Maybe the choice of used tires in Alabama is not as big as that of new tire shopping destinations, there are still plenty of good locations to shop for used tires. Used tire malls and private shops are available across the state, and online tire shopping is gaining popularity in AL. United Tires is your “Tire shop near me in Alabama”: we ship all orders on the same business day (so don’t forget to confirm your order before 1 p.m. CST!) It won’t take long for you to get your fresh set of tires right to your doorstep in Alabama! The benefits of buying used tires at Utires.com:
    • United Tires offers its customers in Alabama one of the largest tire inventories in the online world: right now we have over 55,000 used tires to choose from
    • Each used tire in our stock undergoes a thorough 2-stage inspection: visual and automatic. We do not sell damaged tires!
    • We sell only high-quality tires with plenty of tread left: 4/32” is the least that you find in our online tire shop
    • We have a wide selection of driven once tires: basically, they are new tires that have been only tried on but never used. But the discounts for them reach up to 50%!
    • Our Alabama customers can customize their choice based on multiple parameters: tire size, model, rim, brand, car make, season, performance, terrain, etc.

What tires do you need for Alabama weather?

What tires do you need for Alabama weather?
What tires do you need for Alabama weather?
Britannica calls Alabama’s climate “temperate”: winters here can be cold, but rarely snowy. The average annual temperature is 64 °F, rising up to 100 °F in the southern counties and falling to 30 °F in the northern. Precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year, with an annual average of around 56 inches. These weather conditions can be called a perfect example of what all-season tires are designed for. Mild, not too cold, not too hot, with not too much precipitation.
Make the right choice of over 50,000 new or used all season tires from our catalog, or shop for the other categories using the convenient United Tires search console. Confirm your order by 1 p.m. CST and get it shipped for free by FedEx on the same business day!
If you ask us if you can drive on summer or performance tires in Alabama all year round, then the answer is… not really. If you want the enhanced performance, you have to remember that the summer tires’ rubber compound is harder, so it can grip better with the hot road’s surface, and the tread pattern has deep grooves for better aquaplaning. So when the road freezes, your summer tires stiffen even more, turning into skates and making driving super dangerous. So better get two sets of rubber (summer+all-season) or (summer+winter): our discounts allow you to do so for the price of just one set of tires!

    DRIVERS’ ALABAMA GUIDE: PRACTICAL INFORMATION

    Drivers’ Alabama guide: practical information
    Drivers’ Alabama guide: practical information
Living in the Cotton State or just planning a visit? This little guide by United Tires experts is all you need to drive with comfort and safety on Alabama roads. It includes the most important traffic rules, car window tinting regulations, bypass routes, and much more. Welcome to Alabama and have a beautiful ride!

    Live traffic report

Overall, Alabama is not the worst state of all when it comes to traffic. But, as pretty much everywhere, large metropolitan areas are prone to heavy traffic congestion. The worst in the Yellowhammer State is Birmingham: annually its residents spend over 40 hours in traffic jams, and it has been recently reported that the traffic is worse during evening rush hours. The next are Montgomery with 11 hours and Athens with nine. To be up-to-date with the current traffic and road conditions, you can always refer to these trustworthy online resources:

    Seasonal tire changeover

Alabama’s climate doesn’t require a seasonal tire changeover, it would be totally fine driving all year round on all-season tires. Customize your search on our website based on the tire size, model, brand, and many other parameters. You can also shop for new, used, or driven only once tires for your Alabama ride, choose them for your SUV, truck, trailer, or another vehicle.
In case you prefer the enhanced summer performance, shop for new or used summer or performance tires. But remember, if you live closer to the northern part of the state, you may need another set of rubber (good all-season tires will do just fine) to drive in winter.
According to Alabama Code Title 32. Motor Vehicles and Traffic § 32-5-210, driving on studded tires or on the tires equipped with snow chains is illegal, besides severe weather conditions, when studs or chains can prevent the vehicle from skidding or sliding on the road.
No matter which tires you choose on our website, you will get them delivered right to your doorstep for free by FedEx Ground. And remember, by choosing high-quality used tires from a reputable online store, you can save up to 50% and get yourself a set of two tires instead of one!

    Driving Laws

Alabama Code Title 32. Motor Vehicles and Traffic §32-5A-191 defines the key traffic rules that all drivers must follow. Here are a few most important:
    • If the alcohol weight in the blood is or exceeds 0.8 percent, a person shall not be driving.
    • For drivers under the age of 21, the alcohol weight in the blood cannot be or exceed 0.2 percent
    • Driving without a license is considered a misdemeanor and is punished by a fine from $10 to $100, plus an additional penalty of $50
    • Driving without insurance is illegal in Alabama. To quote Section 32-7-6(c): (the liability insurance) “shall be issued in amounts no less than the minimum amounts set for bodily injury or death and for the destruction of property”
    • All drivers at all times shall be driving with “a reasonable and prudent speed”
    • Reckless driving upon a first conviction can lead to imprisonment from 5 to 90 days or to a fine from $25 to $500 or both
    • The right-of-way: when two vehicles are approaching the intersection at the same time, the vehicle on the left shall yield to the vehicle on the right
    • Text messaging while driving is illegal in Alabama, however, speaking on the phone is not.

    Parking rules

Alabama Code Title 32. Motor Vehicles and Traffic Section 32-5A-137 defines the key parking rules that all drivers must follow. Here are a few most important:
    1. Double parking is prohibited in Alabama

    Window tint laws

    Tint darkness for sedans

    • Windshield: only a non-reflective 6-inch visor strip is allowed
    • Front side / backside / rear windows: maximum of 32% VLT is allowed

Tint darkness for vans and SUVs

    • Front side windows: maximum of 32% VLT is allowed
    • Backside windows: application of films of any darkness is allowed
    • Rear window: application of films of any darkness is allowed

    Reflective films application

Reflective films application is legal in Alabama, but the reflection of the tint cannot exceed 20%

    Window tint film certification

Manufacturers must certify films sold in the state of Alabama

    Helmet laws

    Roads and highways

    Interstate highways

Nineteen interstate highways of over 3,800 miles travel through Alabama. US Route 11 (as well as US 78, 80, 82, 84, 90, and 98) enters the state from Mississippi; US Route 29 (as well as 231) — from Florida, and US 331 is the main highway connecting major Alabama’s destinations with Florida's beaches. US 278 travels through Mississippi to Georgia across the northern part of the state. US Route 31 has the longest segment in the state (over 30 miles long) and it is a north-south highway that begins in Spanish Fort and goes with I-65 to the state of Tennessee.

Are snow chains legal in Alabama?

Snow chains are legal in Alabama only when it snows, rains, or in the other weather conditions “that cause the vehicle to slide or skid” (Alabama Code Title 32. Motor Vehicles and Traffic § 32-5-210).
